like to be one of the first to receive the trip registration form, we will give
you first chance before making it available to others. For both trips, it will

<title>Personal View on Watseka and the Flooding from Tim Hetzner - Disaster Relief</title>
<link>http://lcc.lutheranchurchcharities.org/app/w_page.php?type=section&amp;id=170</link>
<guid>http://lcc.lutheranchurchcharities.org/app/w_page.php?type=section&amp;id=170&amp;article_id=2804</guid>
<description>

On January 9th flooding began in the small town of Watseka Illinois,
Population 8,000.  In the town there are two Lutheran Churches - Calvary
(LCMS) and Faith (AALC).  Lutheran Church Charities immediately contacted
them and the surrounding churches to monitor the situation.  On the 11th LCC
sent out an appeal for volunteers and on the 13th we began our work in
Watseka.  120 families have been flooded out.  Many of the families are
	within 1-4 blocks of Calvary.

Photo: Tim Speaking at Calvary Lutheran in Watseka, IL

Since the 13th I have met with many of the families and people of Watseka.
It is a wonderful small country town - down to earth hard working people.
They truly are a community!  The churches LCC has been working through have
active memberships and are some of the most loving and caring people I have
ever met.  Pastor Don Love and Pastor Michael Giese are caring shepherds of
their flocks and are torn by the devastation that has occurred to their
member&#39;s homes.  Elderly, families, single parents, those who have
disabilities, those struggling with terminal illness.  All affected, losing
most if not all of their belongings.  Some have been able to get into
temporary housing, some are sticking it out in their homes, some are staying
with friends, some will never return to their homes.  For all, it is very
	emotional.

So where is God in all this? He is there! He is there STRONG and ACTIVE
through His people!  He is there through His people providing Help and Hope
and Healing!  I am always amazed at how well the church functions in times
	of crisis!

What needs to be done?  We need boots on the ground to help people sort out
the personal items that are still in their homes.  We need boots on the ground
to help salvage and save and toss items.  Financial assistance is needed for
families on fixed incomes.  Furniture is needed for families who do not have the
means to purchase new or used furniture.  Cars are needed for those who lost
theirs.  Some had flood insurance - most did not.  I could go on - but I think
you get the point I am making.  There is a song that was written a few years
ago, it starts out
&quot;Rise up, O men of God, have done with lesser things!&quot;  That is what can be done
- Rise Up and Be the Church Jesus Christ Died for and Saved to Serve!

In our newsletter you will see opportunities to serve and support.  Pray and
Rise Up!

Serving Together, Serving Christ, so we can Serve Others in His Name

<title>Emergency Volunteers and Support Needed for Watseka Flooding - Disaster Relief</title>

<description>
Hardest Hit and Most Immediate Need:

Rev. Donald Love at Calvary Lutheran Church in Watseka, Illinois

This whole community has been hit with severe flooding, which is still increasing. Calvary served as a shelter for the Red Cross until they had to evacuate. With power and telephones out, Pastor Love has not been able to contact all his members but he has personally been in contact with families that have been flooded. Some examples:
Retired LCMS Pastor and His Wife: Lost everything in their home, it is under water.
Widow, 89 years old: Lost almost everything in her home - has 3 feet of water in her kitchen.
Farm Family: Their farm is under water and their animals - they do not know how they are because they are all out in the fields. Will not know how they are until they can get onto their property.

These are just some of the families that he shared with me.

LCC Staff will be going to Watseka to do an on-site evaluation. Most likely volunteers will not be able to come into the area until Tuesday at the earliest. I have been in contact with the area Red Cross who are saying the same. I have also been in contact with Rev. Glenn Merritt at LCMS Human Care and World Relief and have kept him abreast of the situation.

Over the next several days LCC will assess the situation and establish a point of operation in Watseka. We have been in contact with the area LCMS churches as alternative sites to establish a home base if we cannot set up in town.
Immediate Help:

Supplies
Some items that will be needed once we can get in:
Dry Vacs
Waders and boots
Work gloves
Garbage bags

We will keep you posted on our web site as more details are known. For those who sign up to volunteer we will be emailing you with updates.

Update on Tornadoes in Illinois/Wisconsin:

Rev. Mike Pfingsten at St Paul Harvard:

Although a number of families have suffered damage - it is manageable at this point and no one is displaced. &quot;Other areas are more in need&quot; according to Pastor Pfingsten.

Rev. Allan Buss at Immanuel Belvidere:

Volunteers showed up this week from our earlier appeal as well as volunteers at Immanuel Belvidere - all seems to be taken care of. Those displaced are living with other family members.

In the Midst of Disaster - the People of God always shine through with the Hope that we have in Jesus Christ. In the midst of Chaos the Compassion of Christ brings hope and healing - and God works through His People to MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you for your faithfulness in Serving others in His Name!

Update: Volunteers Needed To Help Rebuild Greensburg Kansas

	Request from Chuck Jedele, Site
	Director

GREENSBURG REBUILDING

We are now into the long term rebuilding work. At present the volunteers are
working on about 10 homes and the cafeteria/community building at the volunteer
camp. The aim is to have enough structures enclosed so that volunteers will
have work throughout the winter. The SOUTH CENTRAL KANSAS TORNADO RELIEF
ORGANIZATION (SCKTRO) has completed 31 projects of 150 on file.

VOLUNTEER CAMP

There are 40 bunk beds available now. A camp cook will begin work on Nov. 12.
The cafeteria/community room is nearly completed. A very nice shower facility
is operational. Orphan Grain Train sent all of modular/trailers for this camp.
Our facilities are heated. We are awaiting another shower unit and another 20
bed sleeping unit

There are no volunteers scheduled until March 29. There is space to stay
in the Volunteer Camp. There will be a blitz build during the spring break
weeks. Blitz Build is the construction of a house or houses in a very short
time with many volunteers. The volunteers do need to have one skilled person to
lead the group if possible. We have limited tools. Therefore talk to me just
prior to coming to determine needed tools and probable work assignments.

RV&#39;ERS

We can provide electrical hookups during the winter months for a large number.
Water and sewer spaces are limited.

If you as an individual or a group from your church would like to volunteer
at the Greensburg Volunteer Village

As a result of the storm systems that swept across the
Midwest in August, volunteers for LCC are needed to assist with
clean up efforts in Ohio, Minnesota, and Kansas. LCC has received
			the following requests:

					Kansas Flooding and
					Tornado Cleanup

At the directive of Rev. Glenn Merritt of
LCMS World Relief and Human Care and the Rev. Keith E.
Kohlmeier, President, Kansas District LCMS, they will be
accepting volunteers after Labor Day to help in Greensburg
					and the surrounding area.

					Update- First
Volunteer Village Opens in Greensburg, Kansas.  Volunteers
					Needed.

					This
past week the Volunteer Village opened in Greensburg
Kansas.  The Village will be able to house 40 volunteers.
Orphan Grain Train (OGT) brought out two mobile bedroom
units that are heated and air-conditioned. Each bedroom is
outfitted with bunk beds. OGT also provided a Shower/
Laundry Unit and a mobile kitchen.  Volunteers constructed a
					dining room /fellowship facility.

Skilled volunteers are needed to work in rebuilding homes or
building new construction. If you do not have construction
skills they still need you.  You will be assigned to a team
with one or more skilled persons. There is a special need
for volunteers for November and December. The camp director
requests that all skilled worker forms be filled out and

			Update-
LCC staff member Dianna Bonfield had the opportunity on Sunday Oct
7th to spend the day in Findlay talking with victims of the flooding
in Ohio.  LCC has been in contact with LSS of Ohio who is
coordinating the disaster relief for the seven counties affected by
the floods.  We have learned that they have moved out of the mucking
out stage and are moving into the rebuilding stage.  Their first
priority is to work with the elderly and low income families.  They
need both skilled and non- skilled workers. There is also a need for
Stephen ministers, care ministry people, social workers, Chaplains
and people with good listening and ministry skills. Volunteers who
live within driving distance can come for a day or an extended
weekend. Housing is available for individuals or teams who can stay
			for a week or longer.

As you are aware, the fires in California have
caused tremendous devastation for many individuals and families.  As
I am writing this, the fires are still burning - so there are still
many &quot;unknowns&quot; out there, but as one pastor shared with me this
			morning,
&quot;Never be lacking in zeal, but keep
your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient
in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God&#39;s People who are
			in need.  Practice hospitality.&quot;

What you can do...

We have received many emails and phone calls asking &quot; What
can we do to help&quot;.  I appreciate your Christian concern and Christ like
Compassion - it is an inspiration to us and to those on the ground in
California.  At this point, this is what can be done:

Pray - Pray for those who have lost property
and belongs.  Pray for those who are serving those who are displaced from
their homes because of the fires.  Pray for all the workers who continue to
	battle the fires.

Financial contributions are needed now and for
the days ahead.  There are several ways in which you can support the efforts
financially.  I will list those efforts of LCC (Dollar In/Dollar Out) and of
others - and if you are led you can choose how you would like your dollars
	to go.

Keep Informed by going to the LCC Web site and
the Web site of LCMS World Relief and Human Care for current updates.

On behalf of all the people involved out in California with
the fires, LCC thanks you for your prayers and support.  As in all disasters
that occur - God continues to shine forth and work in and through His People to
share the Compassion and Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And
we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who
have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

Serving Together, Serving Christ, so we can serve others IN
HIS NAME.

LCC is asking you, your family, church, or organization to put together
Welcome Home Packs that you
will send to our churches in our
Southern District to be given to returning families.

What
is a Welcome Home Pack?

It is a box filled with new kitchen items such as: a set of pots and pans, a set
of dishes for a family of 4 or 6, glassware, and flatware. The pack would also
include a set of kitchen towels, washcloth, potholders &amp; oven mitts or other
utensils and kitchen items that a family would need when they move into a FEMA
trailer or back into their home. These starter kits will give them something to
help them feed their families. Each box should also contain a personal note or letter
from the donor welcoming them home and a Christian message, devotional book etc.
Lutheran Church Charities will also supply you with a
letter to include in the box for the family, as well as an address label.

<title>LCC Volunteers get CONNECTED because they served together - Disaster Relief</title>
<link>http://lcc.lutheranchurchcharities.org/app/w_page.php?type=section&amp;id=170</link>

<description>

Pictured: Rev. Marc Schwichtenberg, Kathie and James

This past Saturday, LCC staff member James Kirschenmann and LCC Volunteer Kathie Nally were united in marriage at St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Mt. Prospect. Although LCC is not OFFICIALLY involved in being a
&quot;Match Making Service&quot; - we are involved in &quot;CONNECTING&quot; people and
needs! So here is their story:

Kathie was involved in a Bible Study called Word Among Us that the
President of LCC, Tim Hetzner teaches. James was also involved in a
Word Among Us Bible class. As they studied the Bible they came to
realize that Jesus calls all of us to serve others in need in the
name of Christ. When the opportunity came to serve those affected by
the Tornado that hit Utica, Illinois, both Kathie and James
volunteered for the weekend service project. Up until that time,
even though they were taking the same Bible Class, they did not know
each other. All that changed as they served in Utica, they met,
started dating and volunteered for more LCC service projects. Well -
to make a long story short, James ended up joining our staff at LCC
in technology and Ethnic Ministry; Kathy continued to be one of our
main volunteers at LCC. Saturday they not only got married, they
also served together. At 4:30AM on Saturday Tim Hetzner picked up
both Kathie and James, along with Vicky Pientok, another volunteer at LCC,
and they drove into Chicago to Christ the King to unload and deliver
a truck-load of frozen meat to the Ethnic Ministries. When Tim got
the call from James indicating that he and Kathy wanted to go
down Saturday Tim&#39;s response was &quot;Aren&#39;t you guys busy Saturday
getting married?&quot; Their response, &quot; We met while serving our Lord,
what better way to start out our marriage day than continuing to
serve.&quot; The staff at LCC wishes Kathie and James the best - as they
honeymoon, guess where? Utica, Illinois where they met!
So, who knows, maybe &quot;Connecting People for Life&quot; will be another
function of LCC. If not a function, it certainly is a by-product.

So, do you feel connected to God? If not, why not join one of LCC&#39;s
Word Among Us Bible studies. If you want to get more connected
to others why not consider volunteering for LCC!

LCC, Making A Difference in People&#39;s Lives and in God&#39;s
          Kingdom!

Update: Ethan - 12 Year Old Boy with Incurable Brain Tumor Needs Prayers and
Assistance

LCC received the following update from
Ethan&#39;s mother, Jennifer:

		June 18, 2008

Ethan McGraw is 12 years old and has been battling brain cancer off an
		on since he was seven.

The past two years Ethan has been receiving chemotherapy that has kept
tumors from growing. On Friday, June 6, Ethan had a temperature that
sent him to the emergency room and he was treated for an infection.
After a week of no fever reduction, an MRI was ordered an it was
discovered that Ethan has an infection of his Ommaya reservoir ( a
catheter placed in his head for chemo treatments), meningitis, and tumor
growth. He is currently on antibiotics to get the infections under
control. His Ommaya will be removed on Monday, June 23. We meet with the
oncologist to discuss options about tumor growth. We understand that
Ethan probably has about 6 months of life to enjoy.

We were astonished to hear that people from your organization are still
thinking and praying for Ethan and are so thankful. Our family is
struggling with financial hardship once again as Ethan needs more round
		the clock care.

We thank you in advance for donations, but most importantly, prayer
support. May God continue to bless your organization.

		Sincerely,

		 Jennifer McGraw.

	Request from Pastor Timothy
Verity, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan

I am writing about Ethan. Ethan is 12 years old. Ethan has an incurable
brain tumor. He has had extensive surgery three times (1st in 2003; 2nd in
November 2005 and 3rd this year), including a bone marrow transplant. He is
now being treated with chemo therapy. No further procedures can be
	performed.

Ethan is a delightful young man who wins the friendship of all he meets. No
one knows how much time we have left on this earth. Certainly Ethan doesn&#39;t
know. He wants to live. He&#39;s full of life. He has faith.

Ethan and his family are members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand
Rapids. The good folks of Immanuel are helping Ethan&#39;s family. But, indeed,
	more is needed... Click

Family in Need of Funds to Help Care for Baby with Brain Injury

Request by Pastor David Mumm, Concordia
		Lutheran Church, Machesney Park, IL

	Jeremy,
2½ years old, was born with HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy) which is a
brain injury caused by a traumatic birth. Jeremy requires 24-hour care, as
he is not able to walk, talk, sit up or do anything other than move his arms
a little and look around. He is on a ventilator and has a tracheotomy so he
can breathe. As a result, mom had to leave her job to care for Jeremy, which
leaves dad the only one working and no insurance coverage. Recently, their
home was foreclosed because of the mounting medical bills and their home had
been flooded twice from the Keith Creek incidents here in town. They do now
have a small apartment, but are struggling to make ends meet.

Jeremy was hospitalized in Rockford for a condition they would later learn to
be problems with his liver and pancreas. The doctors tried to insert a PIC line
into his leg and damaged an artery.  This led them to transport him to
Children&#39;s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, where he is now. His parents are both
with him there.  Therefore, his dad is missing work and not earning any income.
The Ronald McDonald house has graciously donated housing to his parents, but
they do still need funds for their everyday needs.

Help A Young Man Go To Africa To Do Missions

Request from Rev. William Metzgert, St Paul
	Lutheran Church in Chicago Heights

Jake is an 18-year old from Chicago Heights who is going to Kenya on
August 31. He is trying to raise the funds needed, he has personally saved and
now he is asking others to help. Here is an excerpt from his website:

&quot;I want to experience poverty. I want to go to a place that most other human
beings do not want to go. The reason I choose Africa is embodied in the
responses of many that say &#39;.... why of all places would you choose to go to
Africa?&#39; Africa is a place where people will not see me as one of the ignorant
young masses of the world, but a person who has the potential to change their
lives.&quot;

Please visit his website to read more of the story.

	Update:
Zuleica Arano - Kidney Transplant Fundraising  -

Request from Pastor Jean
Durán - Living Lord Lutheran Church, Bartlett, IL

On Saturday, April 12, more than 100 people came out for a fun night of food
and bowling at Woodview Lanes, in Elgin, to raise money for Zuleica Arano&#39;s
kidney fund. A total of $7,420 was raised through individual and business
donations, ticket sales, raffle prizes, and a silent auction.

Zuleica has end-stage renal disease caused by a rare disease and she must
have a kidney transplant to live. Unfortunately, she does not have insurance.
However, members of Living Lord Lutheran Church in Bartlett and Church of the
Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, along with friends from the community, have teamed up
to raise the $150,000, plus money for post-operative medicines, required to have
the surgery. After more than two years of fundraising activities, more than
$150,000 has been raised and the transplant surgery may happen this spring.

Efforts are now focused on securing enough money for Zuleica&#39;s post-op
medications. Anyone interested in getting involved in this great cause can visit
www.livinglordlutheran.org and
click on the Zuleica link to find out how to help. Or, contact Pastor Jean
Duran, at Living Lord, at (630) 830-3630, ext. 4602.

This is a great opportunity to help a local person in dire need. Donations
can be made directly to Zuleica&#39;s kidney fund by sending a check or money
order to the Zuleica Arano Estrada Fund, Account No. 4800394465, at Harris
Bank Streamwood, 185 W. Irving Park Road, Streamwood, IL 60107.

(Courtesy photos by Kris Mainellis.) Zuleica Arano and Larry Bernstein,
members of Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg, work together to call
out raffle ticket prizes at the Candlelight Bowling event held to benefit
	Zuleica&#39;s kidney fund.

Children
Starving in Haiti

LCC
received the following e-mail from Susan Gross, Christ Lutheran Church, Orland
Park:
As some of you may have heard on the news, Haiti is facing another crisis.
People are watching their children starve to death and actually have them
eating dirt to stop their hunger pains.

The Government has imposed some new laws that are causing a back up at the
docks in Haiti. Because of the drug traffic that has been going through
Haiti for the last several years inspections are now being enforced but
there are not enough people to do this work so ships are sitting at the
docks waiting to be inspected while their cargo (much of which is food) has
rotted.  Now there is a tremendous food shortage and food prices have
increased 400%. Of course this is the simplified version of the problem but
	you get the idea.

Our immediate concern of course is to feed Pastor Isaac&#39;s family, the
orphans and as many of his congregation as possible. Pastor Isaac did tell
me a few weeks ago that his wife was trying to buy food on credit for the
children and is having a difficult time.  People are actually eating dirt
mixed with vegetable oil and salt to relieve their hunger pains. Of course
this meal has no nutritional value and eventually makes them sick because
there are a variety of parasites living in that dirt.

Food is available but the prices are so high that those who make anywhere
from $0.10 to 1.00 a day cannot afford to eat. Those of us that are
traveling to Haiti in a couple of months plan to pack our bags with granola
bars, dehydrated soups and powdered energy drinks instead of the supplies we
were planning to take but until then we are asking for cash donations that
we can wire directly to Pastor Isaac to keep the children fed.

Click here to donate to Isaac&#39;s Orphanage, Haiti.
Dollar per Dollar your donations will be sent to Pastor Isaac to buy food during
this crisis.

STOP is not a word LCC uses often...

But sometimes we have to COME to a STOP

	LCC Vehicle Fund

LCC uses only Donated Vehicles to do our pick ups and deliveries of food,
clothing and other items. Consequently, they have a tendency to break down more
often.

Would you consider helping us get the needed
repairs to our vehicles? If so - please

click here to make a donation.

Thrivent Branch 30040 NW Cook County is helping by providing matching
	funds.  Thank you, Thrivent!

Thank you for helping us so that Together with You We Can Continue
	Making A Difference!
